OVERVIEW

In a joint venture with Internet Initiative Japan, a telecommunications provider, Konami established the digital distribution service i-Revo (short of Internet Revolution, one of Konami’s own subsidiaries). Among the variety of media selections, a small library of Konami’s 8 and 16 bit games were available to play as a paid rental service. The premise is analogous to the Wii Virtual Console (and the similar download services on Playstation and XBox based consoles).

Included in this library was the Famicom version of Super Contra. This port was presumably completely identical to the retail release, except for being played on a Windows machine. Whether any degree of configuration (controls, audio, video, etc.) was provided is unknown.

The portal site was geo-restricted to Japan; therefore, users from the rest of the world could not access any of the site content by regular means.

It is currently unclear whether the games were played via the browser directly, were downloaded locally to the client’s computer, or whether there was the choice of either option. It is also unclear whether video games could be purchased as an alternative. However, a few payment plans were offered for the 30 day rentals, including the choice of 3, 5 or all games. Additionally, a 30 minute free trial option was provided.

The video game subdivision of the i-Revo service was discontinued in 2011.
