ARSENAL

The weapon system in this game follows that of Contra: Hard Corps, with minor differences. While characters have some specific guns, 4 are shared among all 4 characters and the Default Machine Gun cannot be upgraded. Each character has 5 weapon slots, with the 5th slot being reserved for Bombs. Strangely, none of the powerup weapons are retained upon entering the next stage. All guns feature automatic firing.

Powerups are acquired through a variety of ways.

-Concealed behind destructible wall panels:

clowsatwallpanel1

clowsatwallpanel2

clowsatwallpanel3

-Sometimes, they hover across parts of the stages:

clowsatbli

-The mini-bosses in Stage 6:

-The mini-bosses in Stage 7:

-Other times, they’re available in plain sight.

The following weapons are common to all 4 characters:

Slot 1 – Default Machine Gun:

clowsatmagu

The player starts with this gun and can never lose it. Fires a rapid stream of weak bullets.

Slot 2 – Flame Thrower:

clowsatpB clowsatflth

Shoots a constant burst of flames, dealing large amounts of damage. Its drawback is the short range.

Slot 5 – Super Bomb:

clowsatpbomb clowsatbomb

Produces several throbbing explosions, causing extremely high amounts of damage. The maximum carrying capacity is 9, although very few are found in the game.

Barrier:

clowsatbarrier

A series of blue, pulsing rings surround the player, protecting them from enemies and attacks. It also damages/destroys certain minor enemies. The effect lasts for approximately 15 seconds.

Speed Boat:

clowsatspeedboat

Not a regular weapon; it is used only in Stage 3, near the end. The Speed Boat can fire a narrow spread of 5 bullets. Additionally, it can defeat scuba soldiers when driving over them.

Ray Poward’s Specific Guns:

Slot 3 – Spread Gun:

clowsatpC clowsatrspr

Shoots 2 sets at a time of 3 bullets that fan out, with a high rate of fire. It is effective against large groups of enemies and causes high damage at close range.

Slot 4 – Homing Laser:

clowsatpD clowsatrhola

Shoots a long, piercing beam that actively seeks out enemy targets. It has a good rate of fire and causes considerable damage, making it one of the most useful guns in the game.

Tasha’s Specific Guns:

Slot 3 – Sparkling Laser:

clowsatpC clowsattla

Shoots a long-range beam that functions like a baton. Deals a moderate amount of damage constantly.

Slot 4 – Seeking Laser:

clowsatpD clowsattbu

Not a true laser. Shoots a number of spherical bullets that actively seek enemy targets. If the fire button is held down in the absence of targets, the bullets float at the tip of the gun. The bullets cause moderate amounts of damage.

Bubba’s Specific Guns:

Slot 3 – Straight Laser:

clowsatpC clowsatbla

Shoots long laser beams at a somewhat high rate. The laser causes moderate damage.

Slot 4 – Homing Bullets:

clowsatpD clowsatbco

Shoots 3 bullets at a time that initially fan out. They subsequently seek enemy targets. The bullets are very strong and the rate of fire is high, making this weapon one of the most useful.

C.D.-288’s Specific Guns:

Slot 3 – Spread Grenade:

clowsatpC clowsatcdsprmi

Shoots a short-range grenade that disperses into 5 shards that fan out. Causes devastation at short range.

Slot 4 – Homing Missile:

clowsatpD clowsatcrola

Shoots slow missiles that actively seek enemy targets. Despite the low rate of fire, each missile is highly damaging.

OPPOSITION

Most, if not all of the names provided here are unofficial. Due to the ambiguity of enemy names between regions, the lack of names for several of them and the absence of various documents, it is impractical to list the correct designations. Help is strongly encouraged and always appreciated to fill in these blanks. The Opposition section serves primarily to describe and depict the enemies for bookkeeping; thus, the content presented below hopefully satisfies this criterion.

Note: Enemies and objects that take multiple hits to defeat have increased strength with increasing difficulty. Some enemies also appear in greater numbers on higher difficulty settings.

Mini-Bosses

Wall:

clowsatwall

Unlike previous incarnations, this one is a literal wall. On its left and right side, there are Lateral Wall Turrets that fire bullets in various directions, generally aiming for the player. There is a central wall turret that initially fires bullets at the player only if he approaches it. Once the Lateral Wall Turrets are destroyed, the central one actively fires at the player and the Wall Core is then vulnerable.

clowsatspider

Walks around, periodically firing at the player. Its ventral organ, the weak point, alternates between protruding out (vulnerable) and retracting up into its base (protected).

Found in stages: 2

Pit Slug:

conlowsatpitslug

Follows the player around, flailing and jabbing their anterior horn-tipped tentacles. Once attacked, it begins occasionally spinning around and launching a large thorn at the player. Its head is the weak point.
Found in stages: 2

Erupted Dragon:

conlowsaterupdrag

Protruding from an organic mound that resembles erupted land, it fires homing lasers periodically. It periodically retracts most of its body back into the mound’s hole, during which it is protected from attacks. As it is weakened, it attacks more frequently. Its weakness is its head.
Found in stages: 2

Stalking Sea Snake:

clowsatsesnak

It swims and porpoises around, following the raft. After the raft reaches a certain point, it leaps over it, dropping Alien Gametes onto it. Eventually, the raft stops at the destination, but this mini-boss must be defeated. It is vulnerable only when out of the water.
Found in stages: 3

Junkyard Transformer “Anchor”:

conlowsatanchor

The player fights 2 of these Frankenstein robots, made up of industrial and transport junk items. These ones in particular have certain notable junk parts, such as an anchor for an arm. They perform a slow and a fast backhanded slap, as well as a slow forward slap. Their weakness is their torso. As they get damaged, they throw a steel beam at the player on 2 separate occasions. These mini-bosses are represented by small cross-hairs on the map.
Found in stages: 3

Junkyard Transformer “Wheelie”:

conlowsatwheelie

A Frankenstein robot that is made up of industrial and transport junk items. This one in particular has certain notable junk parts, such as a large wheel for its torso. They perform a slow and a fast backhanded slap, as well as a slow forward slap. Its weakness is its torso. As it gets damaged, it throws a pitchfork, followed by a shovel, at the player. This mini-boss is represented by a small cross-hair on the map.
Found in stages: 3

Mythological River Beast:

conlowsatmythrivbst

Found in stages: 3

Guardian Experimental Deathstalker:

clowsatscorp

Follows the player, moving in eccentric patterns on the ground and wall, getting in contact with the player. When defeated, its corpse is still harmful. Throughout the battle, the player must avoid Land Mines.
Found in stages: 4

Somatic Brain Organism:

clowsatbrain

This incarnation is very similar to the original one from Contra: Hard Corps. The hollow shell of alien-human hybrid heads is formed immediately, therefore the boss is immediately vulnerable. Each time it’s attacked, the layer expands and shrinks. The mini-boss bounces around the arena, following the player.
Found in stages: 4

Spearing Pad:

conlowsatspepad

A reincarnation of the Spearing Basketball from Contra: Hard Corps. This incarnation is installed on the ground and its 4 Spears (weak points) extend along the ground to the surrounding walls.

Initially, the spears retract and change angle when they re-expand, when the central pad rotates. After one Spear is destroyed, the others remain permanently expanded and the central pad moves around the pit, rotating.
Found in stages: 4

Tether Bot:

conlowsattethbot1

This incarnation remains on the ground throughout the battle. It begins by chasing the player on flat ground. The bot holds a central turret that shoots fireballs randomly in a limited, forward arc range. Lateral to it on either side is a gear; during the initial chase, a tether extends from each gear and flails about.

conlowsattethbot2

Next is an uphill segment, during which the lateral tethers are replaced by a single anterior tether, which the mini-boss uses to climb up the hill. During the climb, the central turret changes pattern to fire bursts of fireballs at the player.

conlowsattethbot3

Atop the hill, the lateral gears break off and the single anterior tether is replaced by its stubby legs, which it uses to slide downhill. The central turret also briefly shoots frantically in a full circle; while sliding downhill, it rapidly fires at the player. At the bottom, the bot stops moving through the stage. It now simply turns and moves to the player sluggishly, firing homing bubbles in bursts of 2. The central turret now simply shoots a single fireball at a time at the player.

Although the Tether Bot appears to take damage throughout the scrolling sequences, only its central turret can be destroyed early on (beginning with the uphill climb). The mini-boss only begins to actually take damage at the bottom of the hill.
Found in stages: 4

Armored Laser Tank:

conlowsatarmlastank

Similar to the Armored Flame Tank, but fires long homing lasers. This mini-boss can be skipped, although it is very difficult to do.
Found in stages: 4

Domino Serpent:

conlowsatdominsnk

conlowsatvirtrobgntlt

Consists of a series of virtual robot enemies in the following order: 2 Virtual Ground Satellite Turrets, 1 Virtual Stationary Bullet Mech and 1 Virtual Armored Flame Tank.

clowsatenemy5

The Virtual Armored Flame Tank is functionally identical to the Armored Flame Tank. However, it is slightly weaker; like the rest of the robots in this battle, it cannot be skipped and must be defeated. Upon defeating it, the player is provided with gun powerup 4. This mini-boss is not present on the Easy difficulty setting during regular play.
Found in stages: 6

Virtual Lamppost Snake Turret:

clowsatenemy6

Functionally identical to the Lamppost Snake Turret, but slightly weaker. Upon defeating it, the player is provided with gun powerup 2. This mini-boss is not present on the Easy difficulty setting during regular play.
Found in stages: 6

Virtual Pit Slug:

clowsatenemy7

Functionally identical to the Pit Slug, but is slightly weaker. Upon defeating it, the player is provided with gun powerup 3. This mini-boss is not present on the Easy difficulty setting during regular play.
Found in stages: 6

Zit Snake:

clowsatenemy1

The player must fight 3 of these creatures. They alternate between extending up from their shells briefly to attack (vulnerable) and cocooning back in (protected). They spit out a series of homing, organic droplets. The creatures themselves are not harmful. Defeating them provides the player with a gun powerup. This mini-boss is not present on the Easy difficulty setting during regular play.
Found in stages: 7

LP-426 Fly Trap:

clowsatenemy2

The player must fight 3 of these creatures. They alternate between extending up from their shells briefly to attack (vulnerable) and cocooning back in (protected). Defeating them provides the player with a gun powerup. This mini-boss is not present on the Easy difficulty setting during regular play.
Found in stages: 7

Bosses

Carrier Aircraft:

clowsatcraft

This aircraft follows a routine of 2 attacks while flying in a sinusoidal pattern. It uses a flamethrower for a few moments; it then deploys a few Rifle Foot Soldiers. The boss is vulnerable when it deploys the soldiers and also when it uses its searchlights.
Found in stages: 1

Slave Beast Taka:

conlowsattaka

Randomly uses several possible attacks and moves. It can rapidly stretch its head forward a few times to bite the player; it takes a few steps backwards; spits flames in a sinusoidal pattern briefly; slams its head on the ground a few times; opens its dorsal hatch to deploy a few Alien Wasps.
Found in stages: 2

Shadow Beast Entrance:

conlowsatshadbestentr

NES Contra’s waterfall alien (Shadow Beast Entrance):

A more dynamic incarnation of the Waterfall alien boss from the NES version of Contra. Its arms each have individual attacks. The Left Beast Arm periodically spits fireballs at the player, while the Right Beast Arm periodically spits a short, homing flame burst.

Once both arms are destroyed, the basolateral skulls begin attacking. They alternatively spit a large ring of projectiles that break into 2 smaller ones; these smaller ones fly towards the player. The weakness of this boss is its Pulsing Core, which becomes vulnerable after the 2 arms are destroyed.
Found in stages: 3

Assembly Robot:

conlowsatassembot

It runs around, stopping to perform 1 of 2 attacks. It can detach its upper body and throw it as pieces to the player’s immediate position; the pieces return and reassemble after they hit the ground. Alternatively, it can throw its arm like a boomerang; the arm orbits widely around the robot before returning.
Found in stages: 4

Subspace Capsule:

conlowsatcapsul

Commandeered by Colonel Bassad, it flies around and randomly switches between 2 attacks. It fires several fireballs or several pairs of homing lasers at the player. Occasionally, it flies up or down, off the screen, before returning. Scattered throughout the battle, the player must avoid Air Mines. If playing on the Easy difficulty setting, this is the final boss of the game.
Found in stages: 5

Virtual Somatic Brain Organism:

conlowsatvirtbrain

Functionally identical to the Somatic Brain Organism, but is slightly weaker. This boss is not present on the Easy difficulty setting during regular play.
Found in stages: 6

Emperor-Demon Reigning Ophidian:

conlowsatfinboss

Final boss of the game. It flails about from its Tonsil Base, periodically extending up to spit Bouncing Spores that persist on the stage. After receiving enough damage, they start spitting out long-range flames. This boss is not present on the Easy difficulty setting during regular play.
Found in stages: 7

Other Dangers

Death Pit:

conlowsatdethpt

As the name implies, falling into these kills the player. Some are deep pits that make for a very high fall and a usually unknown or inescapable landing area. Others contain a deadly surface or a pool of dangerous substances.
Found in stages: 1-4,6

Firebomb Drone:

conlowsatfirbomdron

It flies around the start of Stage 2, initially dropping 4 napalm canisters that form Blaze Walls on the ground. On rare occasions, it fires a machine gun in a circular motion; it may also drop additional napalm canisters. It cannot be destroyed.
Found in stages: 2

Blaze Wall:

conlowsatblazwal

Large walls of flames that remain sustained on the ground.
Found in stages: 2

Land Mine:

conlowsatlanmi

Scattered throughout the ground during the battle with Guardian Experimental Deathstalker. They explode on contact.
Found in stages: 4

Tether Bot Chopper:

conlowsattethbotchop

Found in stages: 4

Air Mine:

conlowsatairmin

Scattered in the air throughout the battle with the Subspace Capsule. They explode on impact.
Found in stages: 5

Disappearing Ground:

conlowsatdisappgr

conlowsatvolcanerup

Flame columns periodically burst out of the planet’s terrain. This danger is not present on the Easy difficulty setting during regular play.

conlowsatmythrivbst

NES Contra’s waterfall alien (Shadow Beast Entrance):

conlowsat3boss

Remember that sinusoidally moving orange alien brain that Colonel Bahamut ultimately morphs into, in one of Contra: Hard Corps’ paths (which may be loosely based on Contra III’s brain boss, Living Brain Organism Searle)? Well, it’s here again, though blander in appearance:

clowsatbrain

This bland form reappears later in the game, in the fifth stage (brain of Colonel Bassad, the VR zone):

conlowsatvirtbrain

The orange boss with 4 destructible claws, in the final stage of one of the paths in Contra: Hard Corps. In this game, it’s yellow instead and much simpler in function:
